  Some history
The deepest motivations which led to the constitution of the AMU are to be looked for in
the wide diffusion of the Focolare Movement, even in countries which are seen as less
developed from the socio-economic development point of view.
In such countries it was natural to launch activities aimed at doing something about some
of the primary needs of the local populations.
The multiplication of activities on a local level in Latin American, Asian and African
countries resulted in the need for a body at the service of the local groups who promote
such activities, and which could be a point of reference for those (particularly in Italy,
but also in other European countries) who wish to commit themselves in some way to
cooperate with those working in developing countries.
So it was that in January 1986, some members and adherents of the Focolare Movement gave
life to the Association entitled "Azione per un Mondo Unito (AMU)".
Field of action
The non-profit association works in international cooperation with long-term multi-sector
development projects in fields such as basic education, agricultural development, and work
training. It is also involved in healthcare and nutritional programmes to help with infant
malnutrition problems; and with work creation in places which suffer from chronic
unemployment, etc.
It also brings about shorter term projects in these same fields of activity.
In 1987, it was recognised by the Italian Minister for Foreign Affairs as
an NGO and was subsequently included on the list of NGO's which work in
the European Union.
It is associated with C.I.P.S.I.
(Coordination of Popular Initiatives of International Solidarity).
During these years of its activity it has been responsible for various interventions of
AMU at locations from Latin America to the Far East. A planetary map of humanitarian

bulletin in Italian, which can be requested so as to keep up to date with projects
underway.
"UOMO ACCANTO A UOMO", a
videocassette which documents the activity carried out by the association in its first ten
years. It can be requested by sending a contribution of 30,000 lire, to help cover the
costs and the postage.
